Sony Ericsson has confirmed that its Xperia Play phone, the so-called Playstation phone, will launch “market wide” today.
Nathan Vautier, Managing Director, Sony Ericsson UK & Ireland, told the Telegraph prior to the official Xperia Play launch party in London that “supply chain issues” had caused problems “getting stock out of China”. He said that shipments planned to arrive early this week were not now expected until next week.
The network O2 had previously announced that it had encountered software bugs within the Xperia Play software that it was unable to fix in time for the planned launch today. Vodafone and Three subsequently said that they were also delaying the launch, but Mr Vautier said these problems were purely for stock reasons.
Retailer Phones4u confirmed that the new device would be available. In a statement, a spokesman for the shop said, “Although a number of networks have stated that there has been a delay in their deliveries of the Xperia Play, Phones 4u customers need not worry. We're pleased to confirm that people wanting to purchase an Xperia Play tomorrow can from Phones 4u, as we have received plenty of stock and will be launching on Friday 1st April as planned"
